Fleck Calls House Democrat Budget Proposal ‘Unrealistic,' Says Higher Education Must Be Funded
7/14/2009
Rep. Mike Fleck (R-Huntingdon/Blair/Mifflin) issued the following statement today regarding House Democrats’ latest budget gimmick of creating a budget proposal that completely eliminates the $1.3 billion in funding for higher education:

“The proposal put forth by the House Democrats is an unrealistic approach to state budgeting. You can’t honestly believe that the people of Pennsylvania will stand for moving higher education, including PHEAA; state universities, community colleges and the Thaddeus Stevens Institute, out of the General Fund without creating or planning for a revenue stream to fund it. This entire notion is ridiculous and is an irresponsible way to budget.

“House Democrats continue to use the people of Pennsylvania as pawns in their efforts to increase spending and fund their bloated programs. Families across Pennsylvania have been saving money to send their children to college this fall, and now the House Democrats have put that education in jeopardy by refusing to fund these schools as well as the state’s grant and loan programs.

“House Republicans have a budget solution that adequately funds education and other vital government services. State government needs to reprioritize spending and learn to live within its means. House Republicans have introduced a balanced budget proposal that funds essential government programs without raising taxes. This is a reform-minded budget that cuts wasteful government spending and reduces government operations costs.”
